10 THINGS TO DO IN THE CITY WHEN IT’S COLD OUTSIDE

As winter descends on London, the city transforms into a playground of sparkling lights, festive energy and cosy experiences. Even though the days are shorter, the city feels peaceful and full of beauty. With fewer crowds, you can enjoy a quieter side of the city and explore famous landmarks at your own pace. And when it’s cold outside, it’s the perfect time to focus on your studies in our on-site café or library.

Whether you’re a student on one of our English language courses or a foundation student living and learning with us in preparation for university entry, there are plenty of opportunities to make the most of travelling in the off-season. Here are ten exciting ways to experience London this winter, perfect for the chilly days when you still want to get out and enjoy the city’s magical atmosphere.

1. Winter Wonderland

We have to start with the star of the show. Step into magical grounds at Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. With fun rides, ice bars and seasonal food stalls, it’s one of the best ways to spend an evening with your new SCL friends. Wrap up warm, practise your English by chatting with local vendors, and enjoy London’s festive spirit.

Winter Wonderland 2025 in London's Hyde Park opens on Friday 14 November 2025 and will run until Thursday 1 January 2026. Book your tickets here. It’s free to enter during off-peak hours and prices can reach £7.50 for peak times.

Vocabulary Tip: What does off-peak mean? These are the quieter times when fewer people are attending, usually earlier in the day. Peak hours are the busiest, when there are more people visiting.

2. The Magic of London Theatre

London’s live theatre culture is legendary, drawing theatre lovers from around the world with its dazzling musicals, dramatic plays, spectacular staging, and riveting performances. Seeing a live show isn’t just a source of entertainment—it’s an immersive cultural adventure.

Ticket prices can vary depending on the show, seat location, and performance time. While the cheapest tickets start around £30, premium seats can exceed £150. You can often find ticket discounts for students and last-minute purchases.

With hundreds of shows to choose from, here are five classics that you won’t want to miss:

  • Hamilton: Hamilton blends history, hip-hop, and incredible storytelling in a high-energy performance that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. The show reimagines the life of America’s founding father Alexander Hamilton in a modern, vibrant style, with electrifying choreography, catchy music, and witty lyrics.
  • Wicked: This one needs no introduction. Discover the story of the witches of Oz in this spellbinding musical at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. Exploring friendship, courage and the price of defying expectations, Wicked reimages the world you thought you knew. Get swept into the magic and emotion of one of London’s most beloved productions.
  • The Book of Mormon: A hilarious and irreverent comedy, The Book of Mormon keeps audiences laughing from start to finish. Behind the giggles, the show also delivers clever commentary, combining smart storytelling with side-splitting comedy.
  • Moulin Rouge! The Musical: Moulin Rouge is a feast for your senses. Packed with romance, hit songs, and glittering spectacle, the musical captures the spirit of a legendary Parisian cabaret. The vibrant costumes, electrifying choreography, and heartfelt performances make it an unmissable theatrical experience, transporting audiences into a world of love, music, and drama.
  • Hamlet: Explore beyond the West End and you’ll find the National Theatre sitting proudly along the banks of the River Thames. The theatre has a year-round, packed schedule of productions and is located next to the Southbank Centre (a hub of visual art which is also home to one of London's biggest concert halls—Royal Festival Hall). At the time of writing, tickets for Hamlet were selling like hot cakes! This retelling of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy captures Hamlet’s struggle between duty, revenge and madness. With masterful performances, this show draws you into the emotional intensity of one of the world’s most iconic plays.

Tip: The phrase “selling like hot cakes” is a common expression to use when something is being purchased quickly. Want to learn more fun expressions? Check out SCL’s Guide to Using Idioms Like a Pro.

3. See the London Lights

London truly lights up in winter. Take the underground to the city’s central shopping district to stroll along Oxford Street, Regent Street, Carnaby Street, and Bond Street. These are some of the best-known places to walk underneath the dazzling lights strung up across the busiest thoroughfares in the city.

Wander through Harrods, the iconic shopping mecca, with spectacular window displays and heaps of treats inside.

Don’t forget to visit the famous gigantic tree in Trafalgar Square, a symbol of friendship and celebration that shines brightly against the winter sky.

4. London’s Must-Visit Parks and Hidden Gardens

Yes, London is one of the most exciting cities in the world but overdoing anything can be counterproductive. Whenever the city lights get too much for you and you need fresh air or nature, head to London’s top green spaces. Our suggestions include:

  • Hampstead Heath: We’re not suggesting this park because it’s less than a 10-minute journey from our Kentish Town campus, but because this park is a famous open space that contains trails, ponds and a wide-open area for walking or just chilling. This park offers breathtaking views from Parliament Hill, where you can see the city skyline stretch before you. And if you want to add a bit of culture to your day, head to Kenwood House, a neoclassical villa that was originally built in the 17th century. Located at the edge of the park, entry is free, so you can explore the beautiful interiors and art whilst staying warm and dry.
  • Waterlow Park: Hampstead Heath is stunning and because of that, it can get very busy. Well, 17 minutes away from our Kentish Town campus is Waterlow Park, a quieter park that is great if you’re still looking to take in the views of London, but in a more relaxed setting.
  • Greenwich Park: Sitting high above the River Thames, Greenwich Park combines city views with a dose of royal history. Climb to the top for one of London’s best panoramas, stroll past ancient chestnut trees, or relax on the lawns after exploring the nearby market and observatory.
  • Hyde Park: London’s most iconic park needs no introduction, but it’s worth experiencing for yourself. Stretch out by the Serpentine and wander the tree-lined paths that make this green haven feel miles away from the city buzz.

5. Skating at Somerset House

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of gliding (or wobbling) on ice in an iconic location. Imagine ice skating in an elegant, neoclassical courtyard, providing a full festive experience with twinkling lights, music and cosy pop-ups serving hot chocolate and treats. Pure winter magic in the heart of London!

No Sun, No Problem

If the dark days and cold weather has got you down, you may be dealing with the winter blues. The good news is that you are not alone and there are things you can do to feel a lot better. SCL has come to your rescue!

6. Hogwarts in the Snow

Step straight into the world of Harry Potter at Warner Bros. Studio Tour’s Hogwarts in the Snow, available from 15 November 2025 to 18 January 2026.

The sets are transformed with festive decorations, sparkling Christmas trees, and even “snow” dusting the Great Hall. It’s a must-do for Potter fans and anyone who wants to feel like they’re celebrating Christmas in a truly magical world.

7. The London Dungeon

If you’re after a break from the fairy lights and hot chocolate, head to The London Dungeon for a thrill. This interactive attraction dives into the city’s dark and dramatic past, with live actors, spooky sets, and a few jump scares along the way. It’s equal parts scary and fun, a perfect winter adventure if you’re an adrenaline seeker.

8. Light Up the Winter Sky with London Fireworks

London truly knows how to light up the night sky during winter. It starts with the dazzling Bonfire Night celebrations on November 5th and caps off with the spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks along the River Thames.

Across the city, communities come together to enjoy fireworks displays, bonfires, and festive events that warm up even the chilliest evenings. Wrap up in scarves and gloves, grab some hot chocolate or mulled wine, and watch the skies explode with colour.

9. Indulge in Winter Comforts Across the City

When the London chill hits, there’s nothing better than being in a cosy café with a steaming cup of hot chocolate. London is packed with spots that are perfect for a study break, meeting new friends, or just warming up after a walk. Here are two top cafés to check out:

  • Italian Bear Chocolate: Based in Soho, this historic chocolatier serves some of the richest hot chocolate in London. The thick, velvety drinks are perfect for those chilly days when you want to indulge and take a moment to relax. Soho itself is bustling with winter energy, making it a great spot to combine a café stop with a walk through the colourful streets.
  • The Attendant: Located 5 minutes away from Oxford Street is one of London’s quirkiest cafés, The Attendant. Set inside a converted Victorian toilet (yes, really), the unusual design makes it instantly memorable, but the real star is the coffee and hot chocolate. With plenty of space to sit and a calm, welcoming ambiance, it’s perfect for students who want to catch up on essays, work on assignments, or just enjoy a warm break from the cold. It’s also in a central location, making it an easy stop between sightseeing, shopping, or heading to a West End show.

Tip: In London, many cafés are study-friendly, especially in quieter mornings. A cosy café stop is not just a treat; it’s the perfect place to read and recharge before heading back out into the winter streets of London.

10. Shop, Sip and Stroll Through Seasonal Markets

London’s winter markets are a dream come true for anyone who loves festive vibes. Wander through rows of wooden stalls filled with gifts, handmade crafts, and delicious street food. The Southbank Centre, Leicester Square, and Winter Wonderland all host their own versions, perfect for picking up a snack, snapping photos, or soaking up that holiday spirit. See our blog for all the details on our top ten favourite Christmas markets in London.

Final tips to make the most of winter in London as a student

  • Dress in layers! Winter in London can be chilly, windy, and unpredictable, so layering is key to a comfortable day. Be sure to bring along gloves, a hat and an umbrella.
  • Every outing is an opportunity to learn new words and phrases. Keep a small notebook or your phone handy to jot down unfamiliar words you hear while interacting with locals, reading signs, or listening to street performers. Later, review these words in class or with friends, and try using them in sentences. Over time, these little notes can make a big difference in your vocabulary and confidence.
  • Capture the moment! London is full of photogenic streets, parks, and seasonal events. Bring a camera or use your phone to take photos or videos of places you visit. Not only do these make great memories, but they can also be useful for class projects or sharing with classmates and friends on social media.
  • Make the most of your time in London by practicing English whenever you can. The more you practice in real-life situations, the more natural speaking will become, and you’ll notice your listening and pronunciation skills improve too.
