Notting Hill Carnival is one of the best - if not London’s most iconic events - and the largest street festival in Europe! Every August Bank Holiday weekend, the streets of West London come alive with vibrant costumes, Caribbean music, incredible street food and a celebration of culture and community.
If you’re attending for the first time or it’s become an annual tradition, planning will help you enjoy everything Carnival has to offer. To help you get ready, here’s your guide to enjoying Notting Carnival in London as an international student.
When is Notting Hill Carnival 2026?
The festival is split across three days, each offering something a little different for everyone. You can review the full schedule online.
Saturday 29th August
The celebration begins in Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park with the UK National Panorama Steel Band Competition, a ticketed event showcasing some of the UK’s best steel orchestras.
Sunday 30th August
Sunday is ideal for families and first-time visitors. The day will start with J’Outvert and then the Opening Ceremony, followed by the Children’s Parade. After this, expect music and celebrations to continue throughout the afternoon and evening.
Monday 31st August
Monday is usually the biggest and busiest day of the weekend, with the Adults parade taking place from 10:30 am until 8:30 pm. Expect vibrant costumes, live performances and an electric atmosphere throughout the entire day.
Where to go at Notting Hill Carnival for the best viewing experience
The carnival takes place throughout Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove, Westbourne Park and the surrounding streets.
For SCL students living and learning at our Kentish Town or Camden Town campus, the quickest way to get to Notting Hill is by taking the underground to Euston. From there, change to the Victoria line and travel to Oxford Circus, where you can switch to the Central line for Notting Hill Gate.
If you’re coming from our North Acton campus, getting to Notting Hill is even easier. North Acton station is already on the Central line, so you can take a train directly to Notting Hill Gate, which will take 15 to 20 minutes. If you’d like to go to Ladbroke Grove, simply switch to the Circle or Hammersmith & City line.

The parade route
The parade will follow a 3-mile circular route through the neighbourhood. Where you choose to be will impact the type of experience you have.
Fully immersed in Carnival fever
If you want to be right in the heart of the action, Ladbroke Grove is one of the busiest and most energetic sections of the route where you can find masquerade bands, dancers and music trucks passing throughout the day.
Observing the atmosphere
For those looking for a less busy crowd, there are quieter sections of the parade that offer a more relaxed experience while still capturing the performances.
One piece of advice you’ll hear from regular Carnival-goers is to arrive early. Popular viewing spots can become extremely busy by late morning. Getting there ahead of time makes it much easier to find a comfortable place to enjoy the parade.
Tip! As the event approaches, the official Notting Hill Carnival website publishes an up-to-date parade route map, making it easy to plan where you’d like to watch the celebrations.
There are several London Underground stations within walking distance of the Carnival, including Notting Hill Gate, Latimer Road, Holland Park and Latimer Road. Since this is the most popular festival in London, some stations may be temporarily closed, become exit-only or have restricted access.
Tip! Before you travel, check the latest transport updates and allow extra time for your journey as you may need to go to a different station and walk a little further to reach the event.
What to Expect at Notting Hill Carnival 2026
With around two million visitors attending each year, Notting Hill Carnival is unlike any other event in London. It’s free, full of colour, energy and surprises every year. Expect this year to be particularly exciting as Notting Hill Carnival marks its 60th Anniversary in 2026.
As you explore the streets, you can expect:
- Caribbean food stalls serving jerk chicken, patties, curry goat and more favourites
- Temporary road closures and changes to public transport while the event is taking place
- Multiple loud sound systems playing reggae, dancehall, soca, and more
Vocabulary Tip: Originating from Trinidad during the 1970s, soca is a fast-paced Caribbean dance music genre.
How to Stay Safe at Notting Hill Carnival
Though the majority of people enjoy Carnival safely every year, a few simple precautions can help you enjoy your experience from start to finish.
Before you go, remember to:
- Be patient when moving through crowded areas; do not push people
- Keep your phone fully charged and bring a portable power bank if possible
- Ensure your valuables are secure and only carry what you need
- Agree on a meeting point if you’re attending with friends

A little preparation goes a long way, especially at the largest street festival in Europe. Before leaving for the day, make sure to:
- Bring water to stay hydrated throughout the day
- Wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be walking (and hopefully dancing) for hours
