Meet Glen Mitchell, our Academic Director
What’s the best thing about working for SCL?
I really enjoy meeting people from such diverse cultural backgrounds and observing how students interact with each other. Being in mixed nationality classes provides our learners with the perfect opportunity to use English as a medium to find out about each others’ attitudes and lifestyles. It really helps them develop their confidence and make memories of their time in the UK. I also get to work with teachers with a wide range of experience and knowledge, as well as group leaders who often have very fascinating life histories.
How do students respond to the excellent facilities at SCL?
Almost all students tell me that the facilities far exceed their expectations. The on-site accommodation is very modern and comfortable so they are very pleasantly surprised when they compare it to other schools. They enjoy the range of food available at breakfast, lunch and dinner (although we do sometimes have to manage their expectations by reminding them that British food can be very different to what they are used to at home)! We also receive excellent feedback about the classrooms all of which have interactive whiteboards and the public areas, including our cinema and disco area.
How do students respond to the leisure programme at SCL?
Our Discover London and Summer Campus courses both include afternoon excursions and we also offer weekend trips. Students love the opportunity to see a combination of the most popular tourist sites, as well as ‘real’ London. Our teachers are also our excursion guides so they have a lot of up-to-date knowledge about what’s happening in this great city. Our evening activities are also extremely well appreciated as they allow students to mix with each other and invariably our most popular event is the weekly disco.
What advice would you give any parents thinking of sending their children on a course at SCL?
My main advice would be to relax! The safety and security of our students is the utmost goal of all SCL staff. By living, learning and eating in one state-of-the-art building we can guarantee their safety at all times. Our location in a peaceful, residential area only 2 minutes walk from the underground station means that children are safe from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, but central London is very accessible when they want to visit tourist sites. Not having to worry about where students are at any time of day means we can all relax and focus on the main purpose of their visit – their education. We want them to leave us feeling more confident in their use of English and having had an unforgettable experience in London.
